New to golf? Start here
Most of our members started as adults. Here's how to go from never having held a club to playing your first round in Manitoba, with a friendly group to learn alongside.
Four steps to your first round
- Become a member and join our WhatsApp groupOnce you're approved, the link to the members' WhatsApp group appears on your account page. Say you're new: members are happy to answer questions and bring a beginner along.
- Hit the driving rangeA bucket of balls is the cheapest way to practise. Go with a member and they'll show you grip, stance and swing basics.
- Play 9 holesShorter courses are forgiving and quick. Join a friendly round. Nobody keeps score unless you want to.
- Join a leagueOnce you can get around 9 holes, a league gives you a regular tee time, a handicap and a group of friends.
Golf etiquette in 60 seconds
- Keep pace. Be ready when it's your turn, and let faster groups play through.
- Stay quiet and still while others swing.
- Repair ball marks on the green and rake bunkers.
- Shout "Fore!" if your ball heads toward anyone.
- A collared shirt and non-denim pants or shorts are safe at any Manitoba course.
Golf gear on a budget
Don't buy a full set yet. A used half-set (driver, 7-iron, wedge and putter) covers your first season. Most Winnipeg courses rent clubs, and members sometimes have a spare set to lend.
Do I need a handicap?
No. Most IGAM events are open to all levels. After a few rounds, the website gives members an unofficial IGAM handicap estimate. Official handicaps in Canada come from Golf Canada.
Golf is for everyone. IGAM has Indian and South Asian roots, and we welcome beginners of every background, age and fitness level.
